Gordon Brown’s offer to scrap one of our four Trident nuclear submarines is clever politics. In the debate on spending cuts, it neutralises one likely Tory option for economies. Liam Fox, the shadow defence secretary, has already floated the idea of cutting the fleet to three. In reality, of course, this is all shadow boxing because these spending decisions are actually 15 years away. It is 2024 before the existing fleet has to be replaced, and that date may well slip.
